ACT Exam Preparation
The ACT is the most popular college entrance exam in the United States, accepted by every university and college nationwide. Based on what students learn in high school, the ACT measures academic readiness and provides valuable information about students' strengths for education and career planning.
The exam includes four subject-area tests plus a 40-minute optional writing section. With 215 multiple-choice questions and approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes of testing time, effective preparation requires both content mastery and strong time management skills.
Test Structure
| Subject | Questions | Time | Score Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | 75 questions | 45 minutes | 1–36 |
| Mathematics | 60 questions | 60 minutes | 1–36 |
| Reading | 40 questions | 35 minutes | 1–36 |
| Science | 40 questions | 35 minutes | 1–36 |
| Writing (Optional) | 1 essay | 40 minutes | 2–12 |
Scoring
Each of the four main subjects is scored on a scale of 1 to 36. Your composite ACT score is the average of all four section scores. The optional Writing section is scored separately on a 2–12 scale. While the writing portion is optional, many competitive colleges require or recommend it.
What Sets the ACT Apart
Unlike the SAT, the ACT includes a dedicated Science section that tests data interpretation, scientific reasoning, and evaluation of competing viewpoints. The Math section also covers a broader range of topics, including trigonometry. Understanding these differences helps students choose the exam that best showcases their strengths.
