The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is the standard admissions test for graduate programs — Master's and PhD — at universities across the United States and worldwide. The exam measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills.

Exam Structure
The GRE is a computer-based test consisting of four major parts:
Analytical Writing
Divided into two tasks: "Analyze an Issue" (present and defend a position on a given topic) and "Analyze an Argument" (evaluate the logical soundness of a given argument).
Verbal Reasoning
Measures the ability to analyze and evaluate written material, synthesize information, and understand relationships among words and concepts.
Quantitative Reasoning
Assesses problem-solving ability using concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis.
Unscored or Research Section
Used for piloting new questions or for research purposes. This section does not affect your score but is indistinguishable from scored sections.
Timing and Scoring
Each section of the GRE is tightly timed — approximately 30 minutes per assignment — requiring both content mastery and rapid decision-making. Verbal and Quantitative scores range from 130 to 170, while Analytical Writing is scored on a 0–6 scale.
